I am running as a candidate for the election of Local Trustee for the Islands Trust on Gabriola because I have been interested in the unique and important mandate of the Trust since I moved to Gabriola almost 40 years ago. With the existential threats of climate change, the lack of housing options, and the responsibilities of Reconciliation, we need more than ever to support the Object and commitments of the Islands Trust.
I have an abiding interest in protecting the natural environment, supporting our sense of community, honouring our shared heritage, and continuing to learn about First Nations history and presence in this place we call home.
Since my terms as Local Trustee in the mid 1980s and 90s I have regularly attended meetings and events that focus on social and environmental issues, including Local Trust Committee and Islands Trust Council meetings, on Gabriola and elsewhere in the Trust Area.
My children were born and raised on Gabriola, and I care deeply about the 2 generations who have grown up on this island since I moved here. I want them to be interested and engaged in the politics of place, and be good stewards of their environment and the First Nations cultural inheritance we are blessed with. For the sake of younger generations I am committed to becoming a better ancestor.
I believe firmly in creating positive change by showing up, listening, and sharing ideas to support a society whose strength is based on participation and a commitment to principles of ecojustice and Reconciliation.
Working with and for active agents of change, we can create new paradigms for environmental and social responsibility, for Gabriola, and for all of the Trust Area. I am committed to representing the citizens of our Local Trust Area with the same energy and care I have given to other endeavours over the past few decades.
